October was an absolute cracker of a month, packed with stormy seas and lighthouse paintings that captured the ocean's wild beauty! This piece was a delight to paint, with students diving into a variety of techniques to bring the drama of the sea to life.
We kicked off by sketching the lighthouse, challenging everyone to have a go at sketching their own version for a personal touch.
Next up, we used a small sheet of acetate to create abstract rocks, adding highlights that gave the scene a strikingly realistic texture. When it came time for the stormy ocean and night sky, we pulled out the wet-on-wet technique, working quickly to keep some white space behind the lighthouse for the crashing wave.
We added shadows in the wave to give it depth before moving on to paint the lighthouse itself. The wet-on-wet method can be tricky to master, especially finding the sweet spot between keeping everything wet enough to work with yet drying at just the right time. It was a wonderful session, and I’m grateful to all the legends who came along to paint with us!
